Chocolate in Pregnancy is Safe!

If you’re pregnant, know that it’s OK to indulge in chocolate.

Eating chocolate during pregnancy is perfectly safe, as long as you don’t overindulge. Moderation is key to having a healthy pregnancy!

While chocolate does have caffeine in it – the March of Dimes recommends that you consume less than 200 milligrams of caffeine a day during pregnancy – a couple bars of chocolate, or a few Hersey’s Kisses won’t add up to 200 milligrams (mg).

The Hersey Company’s website has an informative article about . Here’s the amount of caffeine in many popular Hersey products:

  • Kit Kat bar (1 package, 1.5 ounces) – 7.9 mg per serving
  • Kisses (9 pieces) – 11.2 mg per serving
  • Milk Chocolate bar (1 bar, 1.55 ounces) – 11.7 mg per serving
  • Reese’s peanut butter cups (2 cups, 1.45 ounces) – 5.3 mg per serving
  • York Peppermint Pattie (1 piece) – 7.4 mg per serving
  • Cookies ‘n’ Crème bar (2 bars) – 0.5 mg per serving

Chocolate doesn’t contain as much caffeine as a cut of coffee. You’d have to eat 161 Hersey’s Kisses to get 200 milligrams of caffeine! The sugar content in the chocolate is what you’ll want to watch out for.

As long as you eat chocolate in moderation, it’s perfectly safe during pregnancy. In fact, it may even boost your mood. Studies have found that chocolate can trigger the release of endorphins in the brain.

Thank goodness it’s safe because I seem to crave it a lot! I hope that doesn’t mean the baby is going to have a sweet tooth… haha. I definitely eat it in moderation because (like you said) it’s the sugar that can add up quickly. 🙂
